World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on 5 June to focus the world’s attention on a pressing environmental issue. It is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. WED aims to inspire more people than ever before to take action to prevent the growing strain on planet Earth’s natural systems from reaching breaking point. Held annually since 1974, it is a broad, global platform for public outreach in over 100 countries. It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet. It offers an opportunity to reflect on accomplishments and renew our resolve in overcoming the environmental challenges facing the world today. It is also a vital platform for promoting progress on the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals. Each year the day is observed with an important theme. This year the day is observed with the theme ‘Celebrating Biodiversity’ and the main host of the global event for this year is Colombia in partnership with Germany
